6 Star Energy Efficiency Standard explained
Housing with the Stars
Since 1 May 2011, the National Construction Code’s (NCC) mandatory 6 Star Energy Efficiency Standard has come into effect in Victoria. Hire A Tradesman’s Managing Director Rob Harris looks at what this means for new home builds, extensions and renovations.
“The star system is a way of comparing the energy efficiency of different houses and rates the thermal performance of your home’s building envelope – its roof, walls, floor and windows,” Rob explains. “A higher rated home is one that needs less energy to keep it comfortable inside when the weather is uncomfortable outside – and it saves you money in the long run.”
Six star homes are projected to use 24 per cent less energy through heating and cooling compared to 5 star homes. This will see Victorians saving an average of $100 off their energy bills each year. Using your in-built energy features wisely will save even more.
The Standard does not take into consideration the efficiency of any appliances fitted or used within the house, which are subject to separate Minimum Energy Performance Standards and carry their own Energy Rating Labels.
The Victorian Building Commission says that compliance with the Standard is about planning early for good design, so the first step is to speak with an expert. Hire A Tradesman has designers, builders and Energy Efficiency Consultants who can guide you through the Standard, discuss how to best achieve 6 stars and suggest design options that go beyond minimum regulatory requirements.
Basically, simple building work that does not require a building permit is not affected by the new regulations. More significant works should consider increasing insulation levels, optimizing the building orientation, modifying window size and location, the use of high performance glazing systems and fine tuning the building’s internal design to achieve 6 star performance. To meet the performance requirements of the NCC, a rainwater tank connected to all toilets or solar hot water system is also required.
